Cullins Service is always looking to get the job done more effectively and efficiently without jeopardizing the quality of the work. That and we like to play w/ heavy equipment, but what guy doesn’t. This year we added 2 Redmax EBZ8500’s attached the leaf plow to our new Wright Stander I. We also acquired a Ford F350 and fitted it w/ a EZ-Dumper then turned it into a leaf catcher. Along w/ our Scag Giant-vac on our trailer we are doing good While we loved the van this way is much more efficient. Instead of taking 20 min to 1/2 an hour it now takes us 5 mins to dump. Our Leaf Removal setup changes all the time and is fairly unique, but effective. This year we have effectively cut our Leaf Removal jobs by more than 1/2. This time around we decided to try these leaf diverters made of corrugated plastic panels. We were sick of trying to blow large amounts of leaves through small openings. So the diverters kind of funnel them into the place we want without them getting stuck.

We started this property late in the day so we ended up doing some night leaf removal or night scagging. It was a good thing we mounted super bright L.E.D. lights on the wright stander I and the Scag giant-vac. We also had to come back the net day to finish up the other side of the yard.

Having a great looking lawn is more than just more than just mowing it. Cullins Service has a formula that will work your lawn and get it growing green, healthy and crab grass free. We don’t want to give away all the secrets, but it involves cutting the grass, thatching w/ our classen seeder which I turned into a turf rake which you can see here. After the thatching we have to clean up all the thatch. Going over it with a mower should pick it right up. Then aerating with our ryan aerator. Coring the lawn with an aerator will relieve the compaction of the soil which can block the grass roots from getting the proper nutrition. It also allows water, air and nutrients to reach the roots of the grass. Not everyone who wants a great lawn knows about aeration, but it is important.

So after perforating holes in your lawn let’s put some fertilizer and seed at the same time. Aerating should be done twice a year in the spring and the fall, but fertilizing should be done at least four times. There is more to it than just throwing fertilizer down some lawns need different types or more of one nutrient than others. Then there is hydro fertilizer or dry fertilizer, and we offer both. With seeding you can pretty much throw seed down whenever although there are better times when you should. We like to put seed down after we aerate and the times we fertilize giving the seed a better chance at surviving. With seeding you get better results when at least 3/4 of the seed is in contact w/ the soil.

So as I said there is more to it, and it’s not that simple of a process. If done right you will have an enviable lawn. Hope you enjoyed this bit of knowledge, and if your in the Newton ma, area looking for a great lawn give us a call 617-446-1382.

Cullins Service is always looking to get the job done more effectively and efficiently without jeopardizing the quality of the work. That and we like to play w/ heavy equipment, but what guy doesn’t. So we got a leaf plow and mounted it to our Husquvarna Zero Turn. We also turned our van into a leaf catcher and attached a Scag Giant-vac to our trailer. The van leaf catcher works great except the unloading of all the chopped up leaves that were blown into the van going like 800 miles an hour. You can see that in the video. The Leaf Removal setup is fairly unique, but effective. We effectively cut our Leaf Removal jobs by more than 1/2.

This year we acquired a Ford F350 Super Duty. We then ripped off the bed and installed an EZ-Dumper. Now I’m going turn that into a leaf catcher which will make things a lot easier on the dumping part. I’m going to document that process and share w/ everyone as well. I tried looking everywhere for ideas and help making a leaf catcher on the back f a truck. I didn’t have much luck so I am going to design it myself and share w/ others. Seeing we started by using tarps w/ a couple blowers and the van I’d say we come a long way. As hard and time consuming as it was using the tarps I’m glad we did it. It makes us appreciate what we have now.

In business and life you should always protect your investments. In a  landscaping business your equipment in an investment. So that means you have to take care of them. When you get a new or used piece of equipment you should study or at least look at the owner’s manual. There is a maintenance section of that manual, and in that section is a time table for oil change maintenance. Oil changes are very important in all engines so change your oil. You need to check your oil after every use. Over time heat breaks down oil and the longer it’s in the engine the dirtier it gets. Depending on mowing conditions your mower is kicking up dust, dirt and debris this will make the oil dirtier and less effective sooner. When this happens the oil no longer lubricates the engine components.

Cullins Service Oil Change Wright Stander i remove oil filter

The Mower we are giving an oil change to today is a 2015 36 inch Wright Stander Intensity. The techniques I will show you can apply to other similar mowers.

Between the first 5-10 hours of your engines life you should change the oil and oil filter.
With new engines changing the oil within the fist hours of operation is needed to flush out small particles that build up during the break-in period. Check your manual for regularly scheduled oil changes. They will vary from source and the conditions you put you mower through.
It’s best to check your oil regularly.
When you first pour the oil into the engine it’s a gold or amber color. Eventually heat, dirt and air in the crankcase will make the oil darker and less effective in lubricating engine components.
Check your oil and if it’s low or getting dark and nasty add oil or change it.

Today we picked up our new Wright stand on mower from Cleaves co. in Needham Heights. We want to thank Paul for helping us out through the whole deal.

We named her Madison. As soon as we picked her up we went to our first property straight away. It happend to be our largest yard which was a good test for our new wright stander I. We are happy to say she too to it like a champ. She did great on wide open areas as well as inclines. She was able to go over small brick borders with ease. The trimming time was cut down because we were able to get into tighter spaces. The time spent mowing was also cut down.

The second yard Cullins Service went to had a fence surrounding the property, a small gate to get through in the front and a narrow alley leading  to the backyard. The wright stand on mower went right through the gate and up the ally with no problem. Second property test passed with no problem.

The third property we actually timed. You can see it in the video Cullins Service made (video below). 4 minutes and 42 seconds. Getting lawns mowed that quick and look that good is what it’s all about.

Very happy with our new Wright Stand On Stander I. The only problem we had was with the Accelerator Aluminum grass catcher. It was light which was great, but the dust was not cool. I had to customize it to cut down on the dust. I’ll put up galleries, blog and video of that later.

  • -Phillips Head Screwdriver
  • -Air Filter
  • -Spark Plug

Not all Lawn Mowers are the same. This is for the Troy Built TB-230. Having said that you can pretty much apply this DIY Winterize / Store for Winter project to any Lawn Mower.

Move the Lawn mower to a flat surface.

You will need sockets of varying sizes for the spark plug and Lawn Mower Blade.

The Troy Built TB-230 needs a flathead screwdriver to remove the air filter and a phillips head to remove the engine cover. Your Lawn Mower may need both or just one of these.

Oil filters, spark plugs, air filters and fuel filters will vary or may not apply to the Lawn Mower you are winterizing / storing for the winter.

The Troy Built TB-230 does not have an oil filter. So obviously we can’t check or replace it.

Check your manual or parts store to find the right air filter and spark plugs.

Remove the gas and run the engine until it’s empty. Then you are going to remove the spark plug boot for safety. Give your lawn mower a good cleaning. Then you are going to change the oil. You are going to remove the blades and sharpen them. Clean under the deck as well. We also have to lubricate parts on the lawn mower. Check, clean and possibly replace the air filter. Then add fuel stabilizer. Finally check all bolts and make sure there are no broken parts o the lawn mower.

This was just a quick run through. If you want to see the full article Click Here.

Cullins Service hopes this was helpful and will have more DIY for our other equipment.
