Having a great looking lawn is more than just more than just mowing it. Cullins Service has a formula that will work your lawn and get it growing green, healthy and crab grass free. We don’t want to give away all the secrets, but it involves cutting the grass, thatching w/ our classen seeder which I turned into a turf rake which you can see here. After the thatching we have to clean up all the thatch. Going over it with a mower should pick it right up. Then aerating with our ryan aerator. Coring the lawn with an aerator will relieve the compaction of the soil which can block the grass roots from getting the proper nutrition. It also allows water, air and nutrients to reach the roots of the grass. Not everyone who wants a great lawn knows about aeration, but it is important.

So after perforating holes in your lawn let’s put some fertilizer and seed at the same time. Aerating should be done twice a year in the spring and the fall, but fertilizing should be done at least four times. There is more to it than just throwing fertilizer down some lawns need different types or more of one nutrient than others. Then there is hydro fertilizer or dry fertilizer, and we offer both. With seeding you can pretty much throw seed down whenever although there are better times when you should. We like to put seed down after we aerate and the times we fertilize giving the seed a better chance at surviving. With seeding you get better results when at least 3/4 of the seed is in contact w/ the soil.

So as I said there is more to it, and it’s not that simple of a process. If done right you will have an enviable lawn. Hope you enjoyed this bit of knowledge, and if your in the Newton ma, area looking for a great lawn give us a call 617-446-1382.

Cullins Service prepping soil before seeding

Cullins Service prepping soil before seeding

Wellesley lawn care Lawn Installation seeding growing grass.

There is more than one way to install a lawn. For this property we are going to use the seeding method. There is also more than one way to seed here we are using our classen turf seeder.  One variable that does not change when installing a lawn is soil prep. One thing I believe about lawn care is “if the soil is good the grass will grow”. Now I know there are other things to take into account like water, sun, shade, weather ect… . But if your soil drains well has the right ph balance, good organic material and is fertilized correctly among other things your grass will be well on it’s way to a healthy life.

Cullins Service grass coming in.

Cullins Service grass coming in.

Some property’s are just plain lucky and their grass will just grow naturally. That is the exception not the rule. To have a beautiful, green, full lawn it takes maintenance. If you want a green velvety blanket of a lawn it will take a scheduled routine maintenance. Mowing, fertilizing, aerating, thatching, watering the right amount. Any way that’s not important right now, but if your interested give us a call ad we would be happy to give you a free estimate.

So we assessed the property and the owner wanted seeding so we removed the old grass, tilled the ground, added organic loam, fertilized, limed, and seeded. That with the right amount of water and some maintenance along the way. We or I mean the client got a great looking lawn. When the project comes out looking good we look good and that makes this work worth it.

Bush Removal and Bush Planting Nantucket Privet finished

Bush Removal and Bush Planting Nantucket Privet in Brookline, Ma Cullins Service

Today Cullins Service is in Brookline, Ma. We have been working on this property for a little over a year, and have almost completely redone the whole property. The client is great and likes to work alongside us at times.

When we first came to this property the bushes were kinda out of control, but we have since tamed them down. These bushes seem to have rubbed our client the wrong way because every time we showed up for landscaping services she wanted them cut shorter until she decided to just remove them alltogether.

No problem Cullins Service can handle that. So with that we cut them down and removed the root system. Cant have roots were your going to plant.

First thing we had to do is match up the bushes to the rest of the hedge. We wanted a uniform look all the way around. We were lucky with these as they were a pretty common hedge,  a Nantucket Privet hedge.

Now we have to line up a straight line and space the bushes so they look good.  They will grow in and come together to form a hedge so you don’t want them to far apart. You also don’t want them too close because the roots need space to grow. About a foot and 1/2 to 2 feet is good. Make sure you plant them correctly and give them plenty of water so they can establish themselves. So far I have not lost any flowers or bushes that I have planted, and I’m not planning on loosing any.  We had organic loam, fertilizer, peat moss and much to properly plant these bushes.

With all the bushes in place in the ground we made a well around the roots to keep water in then we put more fertilizer down and covered all around the top w/ peat moss. Now to finish the project we covered the row of Nantucket privet bushes with about 3 inches of mulch. Not only is it decorative and make the property look nice. There are also a few practical reasons for this as well. The mulch will hold water better to keep the bushes roots wet of moist on hot days. Especially when they are first planted they need all the water they can get. Mulch also keeps away weeds, and breaks down into the soil to create a compost that turns into food for the bush.

Finally we installed drip irrigation around the bushes to keep them watered. So the client can just enjoy the new bushes and not have to worry about them drying out. We had fun on this job and we are and so is the client very pleased with the results.

Spring Clean up Edging and Mulching in Needham

This was a spring cleaning w/ edging and mulching from a great customer we did leaf removal for last fall. We removed leaves from a wooded area in the back and pine needles from all over the yard. Anyone who has tried to remove pine needles knows it’s not easy, but the results turned out great. That is what this job is all about. We cleaned out all the beds and under the bushes.

Spring Clean up Edging and Mulching in Needham front bushes

Spring Clean up Edging and Mulching in Needham front bushesgt

After the spring cleaning we edged the bush, border and flower beds. I like edging it really defines the beds, it looks great, holds the mulch in and prevents weeds from creeping into the beds. The black mulch looks great in contrast to the green bushes and bright colors of the flowering bushes on this property. Mulching always looks good and you can’t go wrong w/ black. Other colors of mulch are good, but you have to visualize the mulch colors and the surrounding colors. Anyway I was happy w/ the results of this landscaping adventure and so was the client. Cullins Service finished Curb Appeal

Landscape Renovation Adding Curb Appeal Roslindale Cullins Service

This gentleman was a neighbor of the house next door. He needed a landscaper and we were in the right place at the right time. He wanted to sell his house and his realtor recommended some curb appeal. Look it up curb appeal helps to sell your house. If your home’s curb appeal makes a great first impression, everyone — including potential home buyers will want to see what’s inside.

Cullins Service removes branches that were hitting the house

This client didn’t want to go crazy, but he wanted it to look good. We started trimming the trees away from his house. You always want to keep tree branches at least 12 – 19 inches away from your house. You could scratch and damage the house and insects and rodents can easily get into your house, just to name a few. We also removed some branches of the neighbors that was coming over into his yard. We also trimmed a tree to open up his driveway area. Finally we removed a dead pear tree that his grandfather had planted many years ago, and that was it for tree work. Of course we used the echo CS 330T and our new Stihl MS 193T.

Cullins Service Curb Appeal Flowers and mulch

We then removed all leaves, debris and bushes that were to be removed. We also trimmed up some bushes and tied some ups well. We weeded out the flower bed and god rid of all the clutter. I wanted the flowers and bushes to pop, not be lost in a mess. After the cleanup we started planting the flowers and bushes. We wanted to add color to the flower beds.

The realtor didn’t want anything done to the grass, so we could only mow it. Oher than 4that the house looks great and is now on the market.

Cullins Service Sprinkler Installation Complete

Cullins Service Sprinkler Installation Complete

Cullins Service Sprinkler System Installation Zone 01 in Wellesley

Cullins Service has installed a sprinkler System for Wellesley Property. We worked hard to get the lawn looking as beautiful as it does, and want to make sure it stays that way. The hot summer days can take a toll on grass. Installing a sprinkler can help relieve the stress of heat and keep your lawn looking lush and green.

We used Rainbird sprinkler heads, flex pipe, funny pipe, various pvc connectors and an automatic timer. So the homeowner has no need to worry about doing anything, but enjoy their healthy lawn.

This was zone 01 out of 06 zones. So look forward to seeing other sprinkler blogs, videos and galleries later. We sodded the grass and dug the trenches by hand. It was to time consuming so we have just got a kissCutter sod cutter and a E-Z Trench Bedscaper. Same great work with half or less the time. Cullins Service will be posting video, blogs and galleries on them as soon as we get some footage.

We enjoyed installing this irrigation system and hope you enjoy or posts and videos on it.

Cullins Service Landscape Design Weeding Patio and Filling w/ Stone Dust Needham property.

This is a great way to bring your stone or brick patio back to beautiful. We took our Echo GT-225 Trimmer and Echo PAS-266 w/ trimmer attachment to wack the weeds protruding from the bricks. Then Cullins Service Landscapers turned our trimmers sideways to clear in between the bricks. This process takes a while, but in my opinion it does the job faster than other methods. It also looks great after and goes deep enough to dig up the weeds root system. It also creates a gully for the stone dust to fit in. After we cleared the weeds we blew the debris of w/ our Echo PB-250 Blower. Finally we dumped the stone dust down and pushed it around w/ a wide broom until all the cracks were filled. After the stone dust is put down the bricks look dusty, but that will go away w/ the first rainfall or you could lightly spray the patio w/ a hose. I think this project came out great. What do you think?

Cullins Service has done a lot w/ this property and mulching portion has almost come to an end. We cleared out most of the debris from this area last Fall for Cullins Service Fall Cleanup Service so the cleanup was fairly quick. We still had some weeding and edging to do. There are a lot of roots growing close to the surface so it was tough getting a clean edge, but we did it. Some of the beds were extended out to cover up the larger protruding roots. We edged and mulches the front all the way up the side of this property. It came out really nice. You can be the judge of that.

Cullins Service hopes you enjoy the gallery and video.
